U.S. Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to the advanced semiconductor research team increased $15 million 500 thousand investment to promote the future development of semiconductors and chips.
The new investment for advanced semiconductor research (MARCO), the combination of DARPA and semiconductor research consortium (SRC) for the future development of the semiconductor technology jointly launched the "advanced semiconductor technology research network (STARnet) part of the project. SRC by including IBM, Intel, micron, Globalfoundries and TI and other companies.
DARPA and SRC launched the STARnet project in January 2013, with a total investment of $five over the course of 194 million years, and each research center of STARnet will receive more than $6 million annually. MARCO, as a joint affiliate of SRC, also received 13 million 400 thousand investment. DARPA said, STARnet is a national university research network, including the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, University of Michigan, University of Minnesota, University of Notre Dame, University of California at Los Angeles, and Berkeley, and other "Moore's law to solve the failure of integrated circuits in the future on the road of the development of foreseeable problems and lay the foundation of innovation system" as the main goal of the university.
In January 2013, IDG news service wrote the University as part of the STARnet project, will establish a research center to solve all kinds of problems as the goal, covering the internal interconnection, memory, processor, miniature and efficiency etc.. University of Michigan focuses on 3D Interconnect and memory circuit manufacturing. University of Minnesota focuses on spintronics, which is considered to be the foundation of future cheap memory and storage media by IBM. University of California at Los Angeles to focus on the next generation of chips with atomic materials, University of Notre Dame, focused on low power devices with integrated circuit, the University of Illinois focused on nano fabrics, University of California at Berkeley is focused on supporting smart city distributed computing technology.
