A team of researchers at the University of New York in the United States successfully demonstrated how to improve the light emission and capture of the light emitted from the material that is embedded in the nano crystal. The study led by physicist Velhode Manno (Vinod Menon) led to a series of applications, including ultra fast LED lamps, nanoscale lasers and efficient single photon sources.
Metamaterials breakthrough indicates the characteristics of the light can be manipulated
In the presentation, the team used a metamaterial with a hyperbolic dispersion to improve the optical emission properties of the nanocrystals. "The use of metamaterials in optical background means that you can manipulate light and determine the nature of the light you want in the medium. "Professor Manno, a photonics expert, says he specializes in the control of nanoscale optical material interactions.
Although other research groups have shown to enhance the light emission in such systems, the professor's own research team in the past have also realized this point, but the result of the past and not much sense, this is mainly because the light is not easy from such a system to emit, which makes it a practical application a problem. The current study has eased the problem and has taken the first step toward the development of a practical optical transmitter based on metamaterials.
"Our study not only realizes the enhanced light emission of the light can be extracted," the professor added. His research team also includes Dr. Tal Julf J Ki (Tal Galfsky) and (Krishnamoothy) (H.N.S.). In addition, the team also includes scientists from University of Alberta in Canada and Purdue University in Indiana. Some study was conducted at Brookhaven National Laboratory of functional nanomaterials in the center. The article is published in the Journal of optics.
