Guangdong Provincial Film Bureau: Funding theaters to install LED screen movie projection systems and other equipment

On March 11, the Guangdong Provincial Film Bureau released the application notice and application guide for the first batch of film project funding awards in 2024.

There are 8 categories of projects applied for this time, including movie box office awards, award-winning awards, filming and post-production awards in Guangdong, publicity and distribution subsidies (awards), supporting funds for projects that have won the National Film Administration’s high-quality special funds, funding for new county and township cinemas, funding for the installation of advanced technology and equipment in theaters, and awards for outstanding cinema chain companies in the province.

Among them, the application conditions for subsidizing theaters to install advanced technology and equipment are that theaters that install and update advanced technology and equipment between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2023. Advanced technical equipment includes:

1. Laser light source movie projector: a digital movie projector installed in the cinema screening room and using laser as the light source for film projection.

2. High-tech format film projection system: a projection system installed in a cinema projection hall that comprehensively uses new technologies in the field of film projection such as 3D, high resolution, high frame rate, high dynamic range, wide color gamut and immersive sound.

3. LED screen movie projection system: an active light-emitting projection screen and related components installed in a theater projection hall for film projection. Relevant product technical requirements should be tested and certified by third-party testing and certification agencies recognized by the domestic and foreign film industry.

4. Ultra-large movie screen system: installed in the cinema projection hall, meeting the requirements of the "Technical Requirements and Measurement Methods for Digital Movie Giant Screen Auditoriums" with an effective picture width ≥ 20 meters or an effective picture height ≥ 11 meters, facing the auditorium's flat or curved giant screen.

5. Immersive audio system: Installed in the screening room, through more speaker configuration combinations, it can achieve multi-level sound performance in three-dimensional space and present multi-dimensional dynamic sound effects of movie characters and scenes. The audio channels should be no less than 32 channels; decoding and real-time rendering comply with SMPTE 2098-2:2019 specifications.

6. Smart movie projection system: Through digital means, various resources for film projection work are optimally allocated to achieve work platformization, systematization and automation. It can complete copy and key downloads, trailer downloads, backend management of screening logs, storage and reporting of ticket sales data, and playback of movies, trailers, commercials, etc. Such as TMS cinema management system, NOC system or other smart projection systems that comply with relevant national or industry technical specifications.

Applicant theaters must pay the film special funds in full and in a timely manner, submit box office data to the National Movie Ticketing Comprehensive Information Management System in a standardized and accurate manner in accordance with regulations, and have no theft, omission, concealment, false reporting of box office or other illegal or illegal behavior as determined by administrative departments at or above the county level, and are currently operating normally.

If the same project meets multiple funding conditions, it can only apply for one type of funding; if the same project meets multiple award conditions, it can apply at the same time, and the award will be based on the highest principle; the same project can enjoy both early-stage funding and later-stage rewards. The application deadline is April 11, 2024.
