Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RenssELaer Pol, technic Institute) the researchers recently developed a nano coating material is almost not reflective, reflecting only a fraction of the rate of coating material is applied to the electronic apparatus. The material is expected to create more efficient light-emitting diodes (LED) and solar cells and other conditions. The study was published in the March 1st issue of nature photonics.
New nano coating material is the expert at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute optical material Fred Schubert and colleagues in the aluminum nitride (AIN) substrate by vapor deposition of silica or titania. The researchers made silica or titanium dioxide on the AIN to form a blanket like nanorod array, each nanorod about 50nnl wide, and tilted at a certain angle.
Coating material because of the refraction of the newly developed and the air rate is almost same, so the reflection is very weak. Schubert indicates that the low refractive index of the material originates from its porosity. By arranging the five layer nanorod arrays, the researchers realized the different refractive index of the coating material, from the bottom of the 2.03 to the top of the air (1), the total reflection can be reduced to a factor of 0.1%. Another good property of this new material is that it is suitable for a wide range of wavelengths and angles of incidence.
While Fred Schubert and Jong Kyu Kim the chief author of the new material that they invented is not used in the windshield and glasses, but StevenDenBaars LED lighting research experts of California University said, "I have seen that this is the best anti reflection effect of nano meter coating material, it can be the brightness of the LED increased by 5% to 10%".
