Pump Express protocol fast charging AC/DC controller
iW1680 is aimed at the Chinese smartphone market. It has built-in digital intelligent algorithms to support fast charging. Compared with slower traditional chargers, no additional bill of materials (BOM) cost is required
Beijing, China, March 3, 2014 – Dialog Semiconductor GmbH (Frankfurt Stock Exchange: DLG), a provider of highly integrated power management, audio, AC/DC, solid-state lighting and short-range wireless technologies, announced the launch of the world’s first AC/DC fast charging controller compatible with MediaTek’s latest Pump Express™ fast charging protocol. The iW1680 single-chip solution utilizes Dialog intelligent fast charging digital algorithms and digital primary-side control technology to significantly shorten the charging time of USB AC/DC wall chargers, and its bill of materials (BOM) cost is no higher than slower traditional charging technologies. Pump Express is MediaTek's proprietary protocol designed to quickly charge mobile devices such as feature phones, smartphones and tablets. Its maximum charging speed is 45% faster than traditional chargers.
Traditional USB chargers are rated at 5 volts and require a buck converter in the handheld device to reduce the voltage to the required output voltage. Using Dialog's built-in intelligent fast charging digital algorithm, the iW1680 can communicate with mobile phones compatible with the MediaTek Pump Express protocol, thereby flexibly adjusting the output voltage of the wall charger to provide the optimal level required by the mobile phone at any time. This not only eliminates the need for a built-in input buck converter in the mobile phone and reduces the total system cost, but also delivers power to the mobile phone battery more efficiently and shortens charging time.
Dialog is a leader in accurate primary-side control of AC/DC power supplies with the latest iteration of its PrimAccurate™ primary-side controller platform. Taking advantage of this leading advantage, the iW1680 fast charging AC/DC controller applies digital analysis functions to the primary side of the isolated power supply within the charger. Therefore, voltage regulation can be achieved without any smart functions on the secondary side, further reducing costs.
Mark Tyndall, senior vice president of corporate development and strategy of GM Power Conversion Business Group of Dialog Semiconductor Co., Ltd., said: "Today, applications that consume a lot of power are emerging rapidly, and shortening charging time is one of the most interesting development trends in the smartphone field. We are very excited about the close cooperation with MediaTek. On the one hand, we have launched the world's first AC/DC controller compatible with the Pump Express protocol, and on the other hand, we can quickly and effectively introduce complementary fast charging technology to the Chinese market.
iW1680 supports a maximum power adapter of 7.5W, with extremely high working efficiency and no-load power consumption of less than 30mW. Communication between the mobile phone and iW1680 is through a VBUS power line. The iW1680 digitally manages the voltage regulation on the primary side of the transformer in the AC/DC adapter by analyzing the VBUS signal and regulating its output signal accordingly. The iW1680 enables easy and efficient control of low-cost bipolar junction transistors (BJTs), further reducing BOM cost and electromagnetic interference (EMI).
iW1680 adopts 6-pin SOT23 package and provides comprehensive protection functions including: built-in output short circuit, output low impedance, output overvoltage, output overcurrent and output overheating protection. Click to view the product introduction: iW1680 product introduction.
Advantages of MediaTek Pump Express and iW1680 fast charging AC/DC controller
· Charging speed is up to 45% faster than traditional chargers.
· Reduced system costs: No input buck converter is required in the phone, and a secondary-side regulator is no longer needed in the wall charger.
· Backwards compatible with all mobile phones that support USB power.
· Reduced BOM cost, thereby reducing overall system cost (mobile phone and adapter).
