More than 9 thousand LED decorate the huge windmill into a shining star.
SIEMENS has lit up the world's largest LED Christmas star, designed by Michael, a multimedia artist, with a diameter of nearly 70 meters, almost a football field. Every day at dusk, you can see the shining LED Christmas star in northern Munich.
SIEMENS superstar is a pioneering technology project, but also an important symbol of the global climate conference in Copenhagen. Luo Xude, President and chief executive officer of SIEMENS, says green innovation is a bright future for us.
After 12 months of development, SIEMENS, along with Munich's multimedia artist Michael Pendry, finally completed the project. The windmill was fitted with 9000 OSRAM LED, with twenty thousand Christmas candles. However, the entire LED lighting device is only equivalent to a hair dryer or electric kettle. When the weather is fine, the star can be seen from 30 kilometers away.
The lighting system also used nearly 400 meters of cable, for each blade increased by weight of 100 kg. The above LED is used in aerospace to use a strong adhesive fixed on the blade, because in the wind, the force of LED more than 3 times the gravity, equivalent to an astronaut experienced a rocket launch.

In the spring of 2009, experts in the disciplines of wind energy, aerodynamics, lighting and adhesives gathered to describe all aspects of the project. Several major issues must be addressed: LED aerodynamic impact on the wind turbine as little as possible? What type of LED is used? What kind of adhesive is used to ensure that LED is firm in any bad weather?
By the end of the summer, wind energy experts completed a computer simulation of the effects of aerodynamic forces. Next, a test was carried out in a practical condition: in the wind tunnel at the Technical University of Berlin, more than 15 models were tested, including different LED products, structural and lighting cable wiring, until the best combination was found. The test results show that the installation of LED lighting has little influence on the performance of wind turbine.
However, even in the wind tunnel test has been completed, all the obstacles are still not clear. And the approval of the relevant authorities. Last but not least, the LED lighting system must be installed within two weeks. After 30 technicians working day and night, SIEMENS's superstar sent a dazzling light. The unique lighting animation took two days to complete. The brightness of the light can be adjusted in real time according to the rotational speed of various wind or wind turbines.
