LED medical applications another victory: cure MRSA infection

Japan's Osaka City University announced on 08 2014 21, the school's research team through natural amino acids (5- aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy: ALA) systemic administration and the use of LED light (PDT), have been successfully treated by antibiotic resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection of skin ulcer. This method does not produce new drug-resistant bacteria, so it is expected to become a new method for the treatment of bacterial infections. The research team is working with the Japanese SBI Pharmaceuticals company to study, will be infected with MRSA skin ulcers before clinical trials.

In recent years, the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria with antimicrobial resistance has become a worldwide problem. A typical example is MRSA. MRSA infected skin ulcers are more difficult to cure than uninfected ones, and many patients die of infection after MRSA infection. MRSA, a drug that has been able to effectively treat MRSA infections, has been shown to be resistant to vancomycin. In this case, the need to develop a new generation of drug-resistant bacteria and does not rely on antibiotics treatment.

Injection of ALA and implementation of PDT

Wound area reduction rate

The team first developed a skin ulcer in mice infected with MRSA. ALA was then administered as a substance that provides light sensitivity, and PDT (photodynamic therapy) was performed using a blue violet LED source with a wavelength of 410nm. PDT is the focus of the concentration of light sensitive substances into the target tissue. After exposure to specific wavelengths of light, reactive oxygen species are produced to destroy the target cells (bacteria). This method is characterized by the absence of drug-resistant bacteria. The results showed that MRSA was eliminated, and had the same curative effect as the ulcer without MRSA infection. The use of ALA PDT may be a new approach for the treatment of MRSA infection without producing drug-resistant bacteria.
