Charles Stark Draper (Charles Stark Draper Prize), is one of the highest awards in the u.s.. The award is awarded every two years by the National Academy of engineering and is considered to be one of the Nobel prizes in the engineering field.
Draper, President and chief executive officer of the Kaigham J. Gabriel, said: "great engineers imagine and create new things. These five pioneers have created new technologies that have brought new light to our lives, and have spawned a great industry that has provided tens of thousands of jobs and made great contributions to energy conservation. "
LED father Nick Holonyak invented the first red light in 1962 LED. At that time, he was working in the Ge Corp, mainly engaged in III-V materials including gallium arsenide (GaAs) research. Later, he also developed the LED (GaAsP), is today all high brightness LED support.
George Craford invented the first yellow light LED in 1972, and led the team developed a nitrogen doped gallium arsenide, thereby enhancing its brightness. In 1987, Akasaki Yong made use of MOCVD machine to grow high quality gallium nitride crystal on sapphire substrate, which created the first blue light LED, which made it possible for bright and energy-saving white light source.

In 1992, Nakamura Shuji successfully developed a high brightness blue GaN based on LED. The invention of blue LED makes LED industry began the commercial production of white LED.
