iPhone 6 abandons sapphire screen and reveals new ideas, JiTe stock price plummets 41%

Previously, various parties had confirmed that the iPhone 6/6 plus would use a sapphire screen, but it turned out to be a rumor. Time columnist Tim Bajarin quoted insider information as saying that Apple has never considered using sapphire screens, and said that the next generation iPhone may not be equipped with sapphire screens. The stock price of GT Advanced Technologies, Apple’s sapphire material supplier, has plunged 41% compared with its new high in July.
AppleInsider quoted Time Magazine on the 17th, saying that not long ago, Matt Margolis, a senior research analyst at PTT Research, said that Apple gave up on sapphire just a few weeks before the launch due to yield issues. Bajarin retorted that this statement is untrue. As far as he knows, the iPhone 6/6 plus has never planned to use sapphire screens, and it has not yet been decided whether the new phones will use sapphire. He emphasized that anyone who understands the manufacturing process knows that to manufacture tens of millions of iPhone protective screens, Apple needs to place an order six months before the launch of a new phone, and requires careful planning to catch up with assembly and shipment. The suggestion that Apple changed its mind only weeks before the new product goes on sale lacks credibility.

Bajarin explained that Apple does not use sapphire screens, mainly because of the high price, heavy material and easy breakage, and the poor light transmittance of sapphire, which affects battery life. Moreover, even if the iPhone 6 screen does not use sapphire, this material is widely used in the iPhone’s Touch ID home button and lens protective glass, and will also be used in two Apple Watches in the future.
AppleInsider stated that Apple had previously signed an exclusive contract of US$20 million with Liquidmetal Technologies, a liquid metal manufacturer. Although this technology is expensive and difficult to mass-produce, rumors that Apple would use liquid metal to build iPhones and MacBooks were once widely circulated in 2012, but it turned out to be nothing. Bajarin reminded people sincerely that they should think carefully before jumping to conclusions.
JiTe's stock price fell 2.19% to close at $11.63 on the 17th; compared with the historical closing high of $19.77 on July 2 this year, the stock price has plummeted 41%.

MacRumors and Cult of Mac reported on the 10th and 11th that Matt Margolis, a senior research analyst at PTT Research who has always supported sapphire, revealed that Apple was planning to use sapphire screens a few weeks before the launch. Unexpectedly, the yield rate of back-end processing manufacturers was unable to improve, and it was less than 25% before Apple changed its mind.
Quoting supply chain information, Margolis said that as far as he knows, sapphire bags are produced, and the problem is not with Jite. Margolis emphasized that he believes Apple and GITE still want to use sapphire as screen protection, and Apple should continue to pay and maintain the cooperative relationship.
