Xiaomi Lei Jun: Mobile phones may become more and more expensive in the future. If you plan to change your mobile phone every year, it is highly recommended to change it now

On the evening of May 21, Xiaomi held a new product launch conference at its own science and technology park. Before the much-anticipated YU7 GT was unveiled, Xiaomi founder Lei Jun first introduced a new smartphone product - Xiaomi Mi 17 MAX series models. When announcing the price, Lei Jun said that at a time when memory prices are skyrocketing, Xiaomi’s price is still very good value. "And I want to tell you a few words. In the next two years, according to our predictions, memory will continue to rise, and the price of mobile phones will have to rise accordingly. Mobile phones may become more and more expensive. If you have plans to change your mobile phone in the next year, I strongly recommend you to change it now." Lei Jun said.

Since last year, the value of memory chips has continued to rise, raising the costs of mobile phone terminal manufacturers. On April 3 this year, Wei Siqi, general manager of the marketing department of Xiaomi China, posted on social media that although Xiaomi has been trying its best to suppress the impact of memory price increases on terminal prices, the increase in memory prices this time has far exceeded expectations. In order to ensure the normal supply and stable quality of products, Xiaomi has to adjust the recommended retail prices of some products on sale, involving 3 models.

On May 16, Xiaomi Group President Lu Weibing also said in a live broadcast that in the second half of this year, especially at the end of the year, the price of some domestic flagship candy bar mobile phones may exceed 10,000 yuan. He predicts that the memory price increase trend will continue at least until the end of 2027, or even until 2028.

It’s not just Xiaomi. Starting from March this year, the smartphone market has officially experienced a price increase, with most models generally increasing by 200 yuan to 400 yuan per unit. From the perspective of memory chip prices, the latest survey released by TrendForce, a third-party research organization, shows that general-purpose DRAM contract prices are expected to increase by 58% to 63% month-on-month in the second quarter of 2026, and NAND flash memory contract prices will increase by as much as 70% to 75% month-on-month. Citibank even predicts that the average price of DRAM may increase by 88% throughout the year, and the average selling price of NAND flash memory will increase by 74%. Many institutions believe that the intensity and sustainability of this storage "super cycle" are expected to significantly exceed the previous cycle.
