Seoul Semiconductor increases MicroLED microdisplay

As profit pressure in the LED industry increases and growth slows down, industry manufacturers are actively looking for new growth drivers across traditional business areas, and Micro LED microdisplay technology has become the core focus. Recently, Seoul Semiconductor and French Aledia have received the latest news.

Foreign media: Seoul Semiconductor plans to invest 250 billion won in the layout of Micro LED micro display modules

According to Micro LED-info, Seoul Semiconductor plans to invest 250 billion won (approximately RMB 1.159 billion) in the next five years, focusing on the research and development and production of Micro LED micro display modules for AR applications.

Relevant reports pointed out that as the core LED packaging business is facing pressure from falling prices and weakening profitability, Seoul Semiconductor has launched a government-approved restructuring plan. Under the initiative, new display products will be built based on Seoul Semiconductor's own WICOP (wafer-level integrated chip packaging) technology.

Seoul Semiconductor’s LED packaging products are widely supplied in lighting, automotive, IT and other fields, and occupy approximately 4.8% of the global optoelectronics market. Despite its patented leadless WICOP technology, continued price declines and weak demand still have an impact on the company's profit performance.

Aledia successfully developed a monolithic RGB epitaxial wafer

On the other hand, according to Micro LED-info, the French Micro LED startup Aledia announced that it has successfully developed a fully functional monolithic RGB epitaxial wafer. This achievement verifies the feasibility of the company's end-to-end monolithic RGB process. It can achieve red, green and blue light emission on a single epitaxial wafer through a single process.

Aledia said its patented nanowire architecture can grow nanowires in a single processing step, with diameters ranging from 100 nanometers to 400 nanometers depending on the target wavelength, thereby achieving full RGB color functionality within a unified structure.

In terms of device performance, the company demonstrated a sub-pixel pitch of 2.5μm, which is equivalent to a pixel size of 5.0μm*5.0μm. At the same time, the company also announced a relevant roadmap, planning to further reduce the pixel size of monochrome and single-chip RGB displays to 2.0 microns.

It is worth noting that Aledia has recently verified its 9V Micro LED device on a 200 mm silicon wafer and implemented a 15μm*30μm blue light-emitting device on the same technology platform. The company also recently announced that its 3D-Nano Micro LED technology based on 200mm silicon material will be officially put into commercial use in February 2026. (Compiled by LEDinside)
