Research on the application of LED lighting in the production system of plants and vegetables has been carried out, and researchers are trying to find out the influence of LED lighting on plant growth and crop yield. Recently, scientists from the Department of horticulture science at the University of North Korea, North Korea, published a research report on Hort Science, revealing the impact of LED lighting on lettuce cultivation.
The LED light can be used in the closed plant production system which can be controlled by the environment, so that the production of crops can not be affected by the external climatic conditions. According to the report by Ki-Ho Son and Myung-Min Oh, in terms of plant cultivation, LED lighting has some advantages over traditional light sources. They pointed out that "LED has the advantages of high conversion rate, low radiant heat output and light weight. In addition, LED lamps can be applied to a variety of narrow bands. Therefore, we can optimize the quality of light while improving crop yield and quality. "They explained that Blu ray LED and red LED are commonly used for plant growth, because chlorophyll a and B are effective in absorbing light in the blue and red wavelengths.
In the study, the scientists used red leaf lettuce and green lettuce and six LED lamps for the experiment. The scientists studied their growth characteristics, including the fresh weight and dry weight of shoots and roots, the proportion of buds and roots, total leaf area and chlorophyll content. In this study, chlorophyll fluorescence, antioxidant capacity, phenolic concentrations and flavonoid concentrations were also measured. The report shows: "the use of different proportions of blue and red (blue and red ratio of 0:100, 13:87, 26:74, 35:65, 47:53, 59:41) The results showed that red light LED was the main reason to increase the growth rate of lettuce, when two kinds of lettuce were irradiated with LED light. The proportion of blue and red in the experiment group was 35:65, 47:53, 59:41. "
The results showed that the blue LED and red LED had positive effects on the accumulation of phenolic compounds and the growth of lettuce. The scientists said: "alone with red light LED irradiation can stimulate lettuce plants to increase biomass accumulation, but this alone will induce abnormal lighting leaves, and a negative impact on polyphenols and antioxidant levels. "They propose to use a combination of blue LED and red LED in a closed plant production system to improve the quality and yield of lettuce crops.
