Korean media: Samsung LED accelerate the development of silicon substrate

South Korean media reported on the ETNews 15, Samsung intends to put the original LED production line "Line 3" and "SR line" and as a whole, transferred to the Gyeonggi Do Xing "Line 5". Line 5 was originally responsible for the production of Samsung's system semiconductor, but the company decided to be converted to LED chip production line. Line 5 main production of 4 inch and 8 inch products.

Samsung has 150 MOCVD devices, the main purpose is to manufacture LED chips. Reported that Samsung is South Korea has the largest MOCVD equipment manufacturers. The industry believes that the transfer of the above line is expected to take more than a year to complete the project.

According to legend, Samsung intends to develop two LED chips in the Line, respectively, based on silicon substrate and sapphire. Among them, the silicon based LED chip prototype has been produced by Line 3 part.

Currently LED chip is still based on sapphire substrate. If you can replace the sapphire crystal silicon, then the LED chip production costs can be significantly reduced, but also to accelerate the expansion of production. Samsung is stepping up research and development of 8 inch silicon wafer based LED.
