German scientists study LED underwater data transmission solutions

Underwater wireless communication in the field of development prospects, earthquake monitoring, tsunami monitoring were underwater archaeological and broad field of search and rescue work. At the same time, the field is also a very challenging area. The main reason is that the radio frequency can not be spread under the water, there is the transmission of data loss and other issues. Schmidt University in Germany under the leadership of Dr. Thomas Fickenscher is studying the solution of underwater data transmission LED. They believe that the improved LED has the potential to achieve faster and more complete data communication over the short range than the sound propagation.

They are developing a wireless transmission device. Through the installation of accelerometers and gyroscopes in the LED chip, you can place the signal into the near infrared spectral range of 850 - 900nm, the speed of communications with high bandwidth, the number of stroke measurements transmitted to head up goggles and swimming pool as the coach.

So far, the team has successfully tested data transfer in a closed environment based on swimming pools. They are trying to develop a head up goggles. Fickenscher believes that there are many challenges, such as: how to exclude the interference of ambient light, how to deal with bubble interference and how to deal with the three state of the stable data transmission, etc..
