DOE releases LED energy saving assessment report for market segments

LED light-emitting diode, also known as solid-state lighting (SSL), provides a new and revolutionary source for electrical lighting market, this source can save energy, and improve its quality, performance and service. Today, LED is able to provide high quality products and cost-effective performance, therefore, LED is trying to compete with traditional light sources through different types of applications.

This report describes the results of 12 kinds of LED for different market segments, namely LED is started from the traditional source market competition or for war, such as incandescent lamps, halogen lamps, high intensity discharge lamp (HID) as well as some type of fluorescent light. In these outdoor lighting applications, in 2010, LED total power savings of 2 trillion and 200 billion kwh, if all outdoor lighting is replaced by LED, it is estimated that the annual savings of electricity at 131 trillion kwh. Finally, it is worth mentioning that, because LED can provide better contrast light and improve the color gamut, has compact structure design, reliable mechanical design, long service life, fast response control and improve the energy saving, therefore, LED has been widely used in consumer electronic display field.

The results of the analysis report shows that in 2010, in consumer electronics applications, LED power savings of 1 trillion and 300 billion kwh. However, due to the existence of the high permeability and high efficiency of LED backlight technology, consumer electronics applications have the lowest energy saving potential. If all of the consumer electronics applications are replaced by LED backlight display, then, LED annual savings of up to 30 trillion and 700 billion kwh of electricity can be achieved.
