DOE released LED lighting promotion report summary of early experience

Recently, the U.S. Department of energy released a DOE solid state lighting SSL (bit more specific, LED lighting) report, the report from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, the early experience of the promotion of LED lighting. In the past five years, the U.S. Department of energy has been the promotion of LED lighting target modified for three times. At present, it will set the goal of LED lighting to achieve the light efficiency of 266lm/W by 2030, per thousand lumens at $0.50.

The experience summarized in the report includes:

1 in the early stages of the development of the SSL industry, it is necessary to use stringent testing requirements to restrain the excessive exaggeration of the performance of some manufacturers, but ultimately lead to unreasonable high test costs. The United States Department of energy pointed out that the traditional lighting products to take the relative luminosity of the test, and LED products are used in the higher cost of absolute photometric measurement, therefore, LED lighting products are facing higher test burden. The light output and light effects also need a new test method - LM-79-08.

2 although LED products advertised for a long life, but there is no real standard method to test the life and reliability of LED products. Different from the traditional incandescent lamp, LED lamp integrated electronic and optical components, they may lead to separate LED or LED light bulb is damaged, may burn out, even with the passage of time, the LED lights will become dim, until the light output is no longer expected effect.

3 although the specification is more likely to be a complete product line, the rapid development of LED technology has challenged manufacturers to create and maintain a complete product line.

4 the range of available light quality of LED products and the limitations of existing color metrics may confuse the user.

5 some LED products will change the color of the light over time, have a negative impact on some applications.

6 some LED products have obvious flicker, negative impact on some applications.

7 some LED products can cause glare, have a negative impact on some applications.

8 it is very difficult to achieve high quality dimming performance of LED lamps, which is being improved.

9 at this stage of the LED lighting control components and lighting control system interoperability put forward higher requirements in order to maximize energy conservation.

10 LED products lack of applicability and interchangeability, resulting in some areas of the market barriers.

11 existing lighting facilities to limit the full potential of SSL, but also need to put more effort to make the new lighting system possible.

12 some projects provide a means to identify the quality of LED products, has been a great help to support market applications.

The report pointed out that it is because of these experiences, LED product development and market promotion than the previous CFL products go more smoothly. However, the unique technical characteristics of LED lighting has also brought a series of new challenges.

The report concludes: "the full realization of the benefits of SSL - lighting quality, energy saving, environmental sustainability, controllability and value added technology integration - is possible, but there is no absolute guarantee. The purpose of the LED general lighting market early assessment is to achieve the full potential of LED technology to help. "
