MiniLED is aiming at the high-order medium size market, and the market will reach US $1 billion 600 million next year.

Chen Shuxun, an analyst at the LED Research Center (LEDinside), the green energy division, said that in 2019, Mini LED will reach the market scale of 1 billion 600 million US dollars, which will be driven by the high level medium size electric products.

Mini LED is regarded as the leading technology of the next generation display technology Micro LED. The direct down backlight concept is applied to devices such as pens, mobile phones, small spacing displays, vehicle monitors and televisions. It is expected to develop differential backlit higher-order machines to compete with OLED's high-class models. The Mini LED concept reduces the size of the traditional LED chip to 100 to m to 300 m, which is not too far from the existing technology gap, nor does it require new equipment expenditure.

Chen Shuxun pointed out that the number of LED used in the Mini LED backlight application is quite impressive, from about 8000 pen to 65 inches, the TV consumption is about 100 thousand to 300 thousand, and the dosage is more than 50 times that of the traditional LED backlight. It can not only make the dimming partition number (Local Dimming Zones) more detailed, but also achieve high dynamic range (HDR) rendering. High contrast effect can also shorten the optical distance (OD) to reduce the thickness of the whole machine to achieve a thin demand.

"But this is also derived from the problem of cost increase." he explained that the increase in LED consumption also increased the cost of packaging, PCB and driving IC, and also solved the problems of uneven luminosity, overheated backlight module, poor light efficiency, Mura and color Shift.

If we analyze the future niche market of Mini LED from the cost point of view, Chen Shuxun thinks that the cost of Mini LED in mobile phone application is too high, and OLED is too much. Basically, the opportunity is not high. The price of pen and TV is close to that of OLED, and the future development opportunities of the high level market will be larger. With the competitive pressure of OLED, the application of display is expected to become the largest niche market of Mini LED, especially in the high Maori market.

Chen Shuxun mentioned that Mini LED will affect market timing due to cost and technical considerations. It is estimated that products will not be seen until the first quarter to the second quarter of 2019, and that the annual market size will be $1 billion 600 million. He believes that the overall output value will fall on the backlight applications such as televisions and monitors with the most consumption of LED. The cost will still correspond to the middle and high level market. Especially in the middle size area, the proportion of gaming monitor is the highest. It is expected to account for about seven to 80%, and it is expected to drive the growth of the Mini LED market as a whole.

Mini LED as the precursor technology of Micro LED, Chen Shuxun expects that the technology development will have a three to five year transition period, and eventually will go to Micro LED. "Self luminous Micro LED shows that Mini LED is definitely not the mainstream." he takes Samsung's development of QD OLED technology as an example, that is, using quantum dot (QD) technology as filter (color filter) and integrating the blue light OLED luminescence layer to get rid of the existing LCD backlight architecture, indicating that thinning will be the future. The trend is that when Micro LED really develops, there will be no need for backlight. Then Mini LED will probably focus on the development of outdoor large display billboards.
