Since 2008, the central government has begun to set up special funds to promote efficient lighting products. The central government will provide a subsidy of 30% of the supply price for each product in the winning bid for bulk users, while urban and rural residents will receive a subsidy of 50% for each product.
According to the China Lighting Electrical Appliances Association, in the three years from 2008 to 2010, the central government invested 2.562 billion yuan and promoted a total of 360 million high-efficiency lighting products. According to calculations, these products can generate a total of approximately 66 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity savings during their lifetime, which is equivalent to saving approximately 18 million tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 47 million tons. This means that for every 1 yuan invested in financial subsidies, approximately 26 kilowatt hours of electricity can be saved.
