With a total investment of 3 billion yuan, Ruixian Technology Micro OLED production line settled in Changsha

Micro OLED, also known as silicon-based OLED, replaces the glass substrate of traditional OLED with a monocrystalline silicon substrate and uses organic light-emitting technology to achieve display effects.

As the popularity of AR/VR applications driven by AI picks up, the demand for Micro OLED also increases. Facing new opportunities emerging in the field of micro-display, domestic companies are continuing to increase Micro OLED production capacity and technology layout, constantly impacting the status of international manufacturers. Just recently, Ruixian Technology announced that its latest Micro OLED production line will be launched in Changsha, Hunan.

Ruixian Technology invests 3 billion yuan to build a new Micro OLED production line

On March 12, Ruixian Technology signed a contract with Changsha Jinxia Economic Development Zone, announcing that Ruixian Technology’s 12-inch silicon-based OLED micro display production line has officially settled in Changsha.

Ruixian Technology plans to invest 3 billion yuan to build an industrial base integrating R&D, production and sales. Relying on the technology accumulated on the 8-inch mass production line, Ruixian Technology will innovate products in aspects such as ultra-high brightness, ultra-high pixels, ultra-high lifespan, ultra-high yield, etc., and cover a full range of silicon-based OLED micro-display products through the "8 + 12-inch" dual-line layout to meet the needs of more AR/VR/XR scenarios and customers.

Founded in March 2019, Ruixian Technology is a high-tech enterprise specializing in the research, development, production and sales of OLED micro-display chips. Its main products are 0.3-1.5-inch, high-resolution, silicon-based active OLED micro-display chips. The products have the advantages of high resolution, high brightness, high integration, low power consumption, low temperature resistance, radiation resistance, and vibration resistance.

Ruixian Technology's micro-display products can be used in industrial design, aerospace, infrared night vision, consumer electronics, FPV\electronic viewfinders and other fields. Currently, Ruixian Technology has product design and research institutes in North America, Shanghai, and Shenzhen.

In March 2023, Ruixian Technology invested 300 million yuan to build an 8-inch Micro OLED micro display chip production line in the Qinzhou Port area of Guangxi and officially put it into production, with an annual production capacity of 400,000 chips.

AR/VR stimulates demand for Micro OLED

Despite its natural shortcomings in brightness, Micro OLED has higher resolution, refresh rate, faster response speed, and does not require complex packaging technology. Therefore, Micro OLED has become the most popular micro-display technology in the current downstream market.

According to incomplete statistics from LEDinside, in the past 2024, there have been 15 AR/VR products using Micro OLED technology, of which AR glasses are the main application.

According to estimates from TrendForce, Micro OLED will account for 54% of the AR device market in 2024. However, since the technology still has certain limitations in terms of brightness and color display, Micro OLED's share of the AR market will gradually shrink with the development of LEDoS technology, and is expected to drop to 25% in 2030.

On the other hand, VR/MR equipment also has a growing demand for the application of Micro OLED technology. At the CES 2025 conference, the application trend of Micro OLED technology in VR/MR equipment has significantly increased. VR/MR devices such as Sony Xyn, Pimax Crystal Super, Pimax Dream Air, META LENSE2, etc. all use Micro OLED technology.

Analysts at TrendForce Consulting said that in VR/MR devices, due to factors such as different application scenarios, the brightness shortcomings of Micro OLED can be well mitigated. In addition, Micro OLED is manufactured using a CMOS process. Using top-emission technology, Micro OLED can achieve higher luminous efficiency, thus also meeting the needs of VR/MR equipment.

TrendForce predicts that global VR/MR shipments are expected to reach 40 million units by 2030, and the proportion of Micro OLED technology will increase to 27%.

Domestic companies aim at Micro OLED opportunities

In the short to medium term, smart glasses products such as AR/VR/MR will stimulate demand for Micro OLED, which will attract more domestic display manufacturers to invest in Micro OLED technology.

According to TrendForce statistics, there are four Micro OLED micro-display manufacturers in the world with 12-inch mass production lines. They are BOE, Xita Technology, Shiya Technology, and Sony, and three of them are Chinese companies. In addition, about 12 domestic manufacturers will start the layout of 12-inch Micro OLED micro display production lines in 2024.

A series of actions by domestic enterprises will undoubtedly accelerate the penetration rate and cost reduction of Micro OLED.

As the time comes to 2025, the development of domestic Micro OLED technology is still booming.

Just at the beginning of this month, Xita Technology’s 12-inch Micro OLED semiconductor micro-display industrialization project with a total investment of 4 billion yuan also officially signed a contract and settled in Mianyang High-tech Zone, Sichuan;

In February, the domestic Mi cro OLED manufacturer Hongxi Technology announced that it has successfully completed the A-round financing of nearly 500 million yuan and will settle in Chuzhou, Anhui, investing in the establishment of a wholly-owned subsidiary in the Sino-Singapore-Sichuan-Chu High-tech Zone;

In January, the People's Government of Jiangning District, Nanjing announced the acceptance of the environmental impact assessment of Guozhao Optoelectronics' ultra-high-resolution silicon-based OLED micro-display device industrialization project. It is reported that after the project is completed, the research and development results will be applied to the 12-inch ultra-high-resolution silicon-based OLED micro-display device production line, forming an annual production capacity of 2 million ultra-high-resolution silicon-based OLED micro-display devices. This project is an expansion project with a total investment of 220 million...

Summary

With the signing of a 3 billion yuan Micro OLED production line by Ruixian Technology, domestic Micro OLED production capacity has expanded again. With the continuous efforts of domestic enterprises, the Micro OLED industry pattern may change in the future, and China will become a key force in the development of the global Micro OLED technology industry.
